Have you ever met a conservative that wasn't Christian? No, because conservatives are generally more tradition. The more traditional candidates are generally conservative. Why? Because if they weren't traditional, they would be progressive. And if you are progressive, you certainly aren't a conservative. Nice logic cirlce there. Anyway, Christian values often mimic, closely, that of the republican party. . The Dems try to downplay religion because, of course, it has no place in state affairs (yeah, right). The Christians aren't going to be too keen on someone denying their faith and therefore flock (good word here) towards the conservatives.

These two concepts or are not synonymous.

I happen to be conservative in the fiscal realm, liberal on the social issues, and most dedidedly not a Christian. I can appreciate the difference in the two. Christianity is pretty widespread, so there are plenty of liberals who are religious as well. They might not speak up as loud about it, but on either side of the election, you are going to have a whole, long list of Christians and maybe a Catholic.
