Does Having Free SPeech Mean You Can Say Whatever You Want?
Recently in the news another celebrity made some outrages comments. It's all over the media how people are upset over what was said. Just because we have free speech, can we really go around saying whatever we want? When does morality and ethics come

Freedom of speech is not Carte Blanche for anything.

Free Speech Means say Whatever You Want!
Free speech means that we can say anything we want. The government cannot interfere unless we incite others to violence.
But free speech does not mean there are not consequences for what we say. What we say can make us deeply unpopular. We can get into trouble with others and start debates. Free speech does not mean no consequences or having the last word.
Putting too many restrictions on free speech is a slippery, dangerous slope.
-- Posted By mama_k on September 14, 2007Even though I might wish people would agree with everything I believe in and show respect for it, to start restricting what and how people speak is really complicated. I wish people could disagree civilly, but you can't legislate that. Of course there are hate-crime laws and anti-discrimination laws, etc., and those are necessary. But they can be stretched to the point of ridiculousness. For example, when my brother was in jr high, he was sitting with a buddy watching girls in their p.e. class do a tumbling routine. He leaned over to his friend and said in his ear, "Wish I had some butter with that roll" (meaning the girl was fat). Well, her friend overheard and told the teacher, who turned him into the vice principal and he got written up for sexual harrassment! Come ON! People get way too worked up over speech issues. Sure, it wasn't kind what he said, but he didn't publically ridicule her. Had he, then it would've been appropriate to punish him. But, in general, I think people need to relax!. Otherwise, we'll be living in a police state. Can you imagine being afraid over everything you said?! .
Even with Free Speech We Need to Watch What We Say
The purpose of the First Amendment was to protect open political and social dialogue as a safeguard for freedom. However, it was also written at a time when the use of reason and a little common sense was expected. Irresponsible commentary, while normal in Hollywood, would have been deterred by social norms in the time of the Founding Fathers. . They never would have dreamed that brainless starlets would one day be the guides of a generation. As such, they would have seen no need to proscribe the free speech of said startlets.
Moreover, the inability of Congress to pass laws abridging freedom of speech (theoretically) does not preclude a moral abridgment of speech. We each have an individual responsibility to consider what is exiting our mouths and why it is doing so. The content of our speech does more than merely communicate ideas. It communicates the quality of our beings. If a person speaks about meaningless, trivial, and vile topics as though they are right, good, and true, there is an excellent chance they are an empty, shallow, and vile human being. .
I think that it is great we live in a country where we had say pretty much whatever is on your minds
-- Posted By Pacific-Writer on September 13, 2007However, I don;t think that gives us the right to do so. I think that people can become hurt by words that are said. . If you believe in Jesus, you shouldn't go to a Jewish community and start telling them that they are wrong and you are right. If you like Mcdonalds hamburgers you shouldn't go to Wendy's and tell them they suck. .
