Will teaching only abstinence in sex education cla@!&s reduce teen sexuality?

Many school curriculums are cutting out all sex education topics except for abstinence, in an attempt to reduce teen pregnancies and STDs. Is this effective?

Abstinence in and of itself will not stop teenagers from exploring sexuality and relationships. There has to be a grounding in solid information and morals to be able to make wise choices. Without truth, you drift with the waves...

Ignorance of sexuality, sex's consequences and the maturity required for healthy sexual unions is the problem. Abstinence programs vilify sex, not ignorance, and it is ignorance that is (as in all human-condition foibles) the problem.

True, but not all programs "vilify" sex, there are many religious programs that teach that sex is a good thing and a holy thing. its just not to be taken so lightly as a random fling.

While abstinence is a personal choice that I don't think should be presented as the only option, it also usually fails to foil any myths for those that ignore the abstinence reccomendation. (The follies of the pullout, for example).
