I used to work 4, 10 hour days at one job, then have a day off, then work two 12 hour days at another. It was a lot of work, but I loved being able to work 65 hours a week with one day off still! For those who don't work that much, 4 day work weeks offer a 3 day weekend (every weekend) and more time out of the office. For example, my company is open every day of the week. It would be more difficult if everyone were granted three days off per week, even though the number of hours would not change. I think it would be bad for business to legislate such a change. That said, I understand there are many businesses and industries that are able to accommodate this type of scheduling and it definitely affords employees more flexibility in terms of their scheduling. There are too many people out there who like the way things are because the current system is meant to support the five day work week. Think about things you do on any given work day... Go to the bank, go to the store, maybe drop the kids off at school/camp. All of that will change. You will be working 10 hours a day on those four days, meaning you will have to go to work before your kids go to school/camp (need to work that out with a non-working friend) and before the banks open. It creates a whole nightmare of trying to work things out when you work extremely long days and then have one day off. Granted, I love three-day weekends, but who doesn't? Lastly, does this mean that certain institutions like the DMV and banks and libraries are going to be open even earlier and even later to accommodate those who get out of work at 7 rather than 5? It's going to turn into shopping at the market at midnight for the next day's food rather than picking up something on the way home for dinner.
