Is technology replacing culture?

Has technology and entertainment become so convenient that people don't use their brains as often anymore? Is it replacing our creativity, art and culture? Or is this conditioning important to the progress of modern life?

its starting to seem like ipods, laptops, high tech phones and video games are starting to replace books and art and thought in general. That is not to say that many of these things are being done with or without modern technology. Its just starting to seem like youtube, tv and guitar hero are sucking the brains out of this generation. I think society is becoming a little dumber with each generation.

Update:
Im not saying that technology is bad. It is inevitable and very necessary in education, science, medicine etc., i just feel like the level of focus on convenience and entertainment is convoluting culture.

Technology is becoming an essential part of life.

People have been worried about the downfall of culture since Socrates started "corrupting" the youth of Athens.

Things we view as culture (and high culture) today were not viewed as such at the time. Shakespeare was viewed as a hack writer. I would not be surprised to hear parents admonishing their children, "Stay away from The Globe dear. That Shakespeare will rot your brain."

technology may cause problems when it malfunctions, but they're problems because they decrease our productivity. we should realize that it's because of technology that the average worker in the 21st century generates thousands of times the goods and services as someone in the middle ages could have (if you could measure goods and services)

People are still writing books, making art and doing new and amazing things with it, using technology to make new music and films...all that stuff IS culture. Not to mention all the practical things that are advancing. There will always be that portion of society that sits in front of the tv all day. Maybe that portion is growing but what can be done about it anyway? There are plenty of smart people left in the world.
