Sometimes I wonder just how ignorant we are as Americans. There seems to be a general feeling that we are in our own bubble and don't give a flying f-art about anyone or anything else. This leads to stupidity and a lack of knowledge. Its rampant h

But unfortunately, more that are stupid than are not. It is disgusting to watch allegedly college-educated people stumble their way through quizzes on basic history, math, and language. In a country where people can't locate South America on a map or know when the Declaration of Independence was signed, stupidity reigns.

Americans might not all be ... - Americans aren't necessarily stupid.

However, ignorant and proud of it would probably best describe us. It's really unfortunate to meet people every day that lack elementary knowledge in any of the basic fields. In my opinion, I think if we found a way to cure American laziness and ignorance (chicken or the egg) that maybe the world would become a better place.

What does that mean? What numbers? America contributes more to the global economy, both financially and socially than most other nations in this world. Americans are human and have the capacity to be either stupid like the creator of this debate, or a contributing member of the global society.

Most Americans believe they are the biggest, the best and the strongest nation in the world and consequently, have huge egos that effect their ability to make good decisions.
Everyone is chasing that 'american dream' that they forget to weigh the consequences. Eg: biggie meals...huge portion for little money... but oh, oops, now i'm 200 lbs overweight...lets not even bring up Bush...

I truly wonder what is wrong with most Americans, I know how Bush became President the first term stolen election, supreme court etc, But for the love of God who were these morons that elected him for a second term? And I think what is worse is when Americans make a mistake they will not admit to it they will blindly stick to their guns no matter what. I actually saw a man griping about the cost of gas as he was putting 100.00 worth of fuel in a large SUV with a Bush/Cheney bumper sticker. I just looked at it and then him and laughed out loud. Stupid YES!!

Americans are not stupid, t... - This is a Pointless Debate

I have to agree with Murphy810 that this is a pointless debate. Anytime one tries to argument that a class is something the argument runs afoul of logic which says that in general attributes cannot be applied to a class. Perhaps, the argument would be better stated as many Americans are stupid. Of course, you would have to define stupid and naturally the argument could apply to any other group that you care to insert.

Americans are not stupid, t... - Americans are not stupid

Americans are not stupid, technology lets them get away with things that they don't have to learn as well. This only bites them in the end though because they don't have the basic fundementals other nations do. The American governments lack of funding in the education system is the only stupid thing I see here.

If Americans were stupid, then why would they be on top? While other countries may be closing the gap, they are still ahead by years.

Less and less Americans seem to want to be a math major or science major. This is going to hurt our innovation, but it doesn't mean we are stupid. It just means we are simply interested in other things.

Americans may be very innovative cantseetheforest, but this might not last much longer with other countries closing the gap on mathematics and sciences. These are the two subjects that drive innovation.

One last thing: It's ignorant to say "Americans are stupid" when it's just generalizing. To say Americans are stupid, is being hypocritical because most people who say this hate generalization and stereotypes themselves. It's quite hypocritical.

Americans are not stupid, t... - Americans are not stupid, but our culture is underintegrated

I think it's pretty simplistic and irresponsible to phrase the problem in terms of "Americans being stupid." While studies show that our public education systems lag behind other developed countries in some respects, Americans have been responsible for key innovations in practically all areas of the arts and sciences. The average American is probably about as intelligent as the average person elsewhere in the world, as krankheit suggests above.

It seems that the problem being hit at is one that could be described as a cultural issue not really reducible to concepts like "stupidity" or "arrogance." The American government has engaged and actively continues to engage in hegemony, the practice of imposing its culture and its political ideology upon the rest of the world. This takes place largely in the economic sphere; "Americanization" is sometimes welcomed in other cultures because it means economic opportunities that did not previously exist, but these opportunities come with a weighty price tag, as any student of economics and modern history will agree.

I think the American culture, because it is such a young and powerful culture, is given to view itself as a sort of "master" culture rather than a simple cohabitant of the world along with the many older and more tested cultures which exist alongside it. The American media certainly plays heavily into this portrayal, as does American public school system. I distinctly remember a large part of my elementary school social studies curriculum as consisting of "America is great, everyone else is sort of okay (except communists)." That's no education.

Right now, America is definitely one of most nationalistic cultures on Earth, on a par with other ideologically centered states such as China or Libya. And nationalism of this sort is becoming increasingly irrelevant and conspicuous in an era of increasing global interconnectivity. It's incongruous. And it's ugly. But it's not -completely- unjustified, and it's certainly not because "Americans are stupid."
